Happy Mother’s Day!
This Sunday in Italy we will celebrate Mother’s Day or more commonly known here as the Festa della Mamma! We at Palazzo Belfiore Apartments in Florence would like to wish all of the ‘belle Mamme’ a very Happy Mother’s Day.
Mother’s day in Italy was first celebrated in 1957 by Don Otello, a priest from the village of Tordibetto in Assisi. This day has now become part of our calendar and, as in many other countries, is celebrated on the second Sunday of May.
We all know how important ‘La Mamma’ is in Italy! In fact, Italy is a country where children (or should we say young adults) remain living with their parents for much longer than their peers in other parts of the world. The Mamma plays such an important role here and even with the evolution of the working woman, the Mamma is the glue that holds the whole family together. And it doesn’t stop when she becomes a Nonna either! The Italian Nonna usually becomes the child-care for the new generation of working mums!
We couldn’t think of a better city than Florence to celebrate this special day with your mother! It’s the perfect time to visit the many gardens that are in full bloom such as the Giardini Boboli, Bardini and Giardino delle Rose. After a wander around the gardens, express your love and thanks by taking your mother out for a brunch in one of the many well-known restaurants in the city so that she doesn’t have to cook for the family on this day dedicated to her. Take a relaxed passeggiata through centro, or visit an exhibition in one of the many galleries that Florence is famous for.
However you decide to spend Mother’s Day, we are sure that if you are in Florence it will certainly be one to remember!
We at Palazzo Belfiore would like to wish all of the Mamme a very Happy Mother’s Day.
